Young and old readers alike today seek answers for tough questions, and fiction is a place where questions, such as why teen suicide occurs, can be addressed. Suicide is a touchy subject that deserves a moral compass, yet rarely is the subject broached.
My book attempts to heal this wound by dealing with the matter tactfully and with consideration for all points of view, including the victim's. For All The Riches Above follows the life of three "Doves": Maxwell Dove (book 1), Wesley Dove (book 2), and Chrysolite Lyon-Dove (book 3). The narrator is Maxwell, an adopted Asian-American boy, and the story follows his life and suicide. Maxwell is a special boy because he does not know his own identity. His adopted family, the Doves, are white and while they love Maxwell very much, their love is not enough. He has to find his own way home, which includes speaking to God and eventually coming to terms with his Asian identity.
The other two Doves are integral to his finding salvation, as Wesley, his brother, is an atheist whom Maxwell watches over. Chrysolite Lyon-Dove, the son of Wesley, is the result of Maxwell's spirit reuniting his brother with God, and the love he has for all the Doves. Chrysolite, meaning precious jewel, must see the importance of forgiveness before he can understand Maxwell's love.
My message to children is this: love your family with all your strength. Each child's identity is unique, and each is special to God in his/her own way. Love triumphs over adversity, ultimately, and family is the key to unlocking the "riches above."
