“I know, I know.  But I can’t wait to go out and play.”

“Fluffy will still be there after you eat.”

When he finishes his breakfast he goes outside and cannot find Fluffy anywhere.  Only a few minutes ago, Fluffy was barking at his window as if to say ‘Hurry and come out and play.  The sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day’.

Deon searched high and low for Fluffy and couldn’t find her.

“Hey, I saw your dog a few minutes ago over by the canal.”

“Thanks, Loren.  Let’s get on our bikes and go over there.”

Loren and Deon are close to the same age and have been attending Magic School with the Elves in Lemuria.

The canal runs through the valley and comes from the Eldo river that runs from Magic Mountain.  The canal is used to water the crops of the many fields and farms in the area.

As they ride over to the canal they see a lump in the middle of the pathway that leads to the canal.

Upon investigation the lump turns out to be a dead Fluffy dog.

“What could have killed her?”

“I don’t know but I’m going to find out.”

Deon picks up Fluffy’s lumpy body and sees the shaft of an arrow with the blade stuck in her side.  The limp body makes Deon look at his little dog and cry.

“Only a few minutes ago she was alive and wanted me to come out and play.  Who could have done this?”

“I’ll bet it was Johnny; Bart’s older brother.  Since his family moved here, all kinds of things have been happening that aren’t good.  He gave my sister a black eye and your brother Jeshua told me Johnny has an evil streak in him that won’t quit,” Loren said, hardly taking a breath.

Loren always talks very fast and this morning is no different.

“If Johnny did this I’ll never forgive him,” says Deon.

Deon took off his shirt and wrapped Fluffy’s little limp body in it and carried it home.  He and Loren dug a grave and buried Fluffy.

“I’m going to find Johnny and fix him good.”

“I don’t blame you for feeling that way but Johnny is tough and he has a gang that visits him regularly from Slumtown over the hill.  He is your older brother’s age and we don’t have a chance against him.”

“I don’t care Loren.  I have to find a way to get even with Johnny.”

“You won’t have a chance alone.  Even with magic.  I got picked up by Johnny’s gang last week and it was all I could do to get away from them.  They are a mean bunch of guys.”

“What happened?”

“I was walking home from school and they picked me up in their old rusty jalopy.  I wasn’t doing anything just walking along.  They grabbed me and took me for a ride. They threatened me.  One of them held on to me and hung me out the door as it sped along. He held me just above the ground and every once in a while he would let my feet touch the ground.  My feet flew out from under me and I thought I was a goner.”

“When they stopped and were smoking some dope they had been growing, I saw a chance to escape, and ran into the hills behind where they we were parked.  I hid and they almost found me.  Sometimes I think they let me escape so I could tell everyone about them.  I don’t know.”
