What are the steps involved in the process of creating a Front Cover Custom Design?

Once you purchase the Front Cover Custom Design service, you will be contacted to schedule a cover design call that will take place within 1-2 weeks. During the call, you can communicate your ideas for the illustration for your front cover. The illustration can be done using a variety of mediums including watercolor, pastel, ink, graphite, photography and digital rendering.

A concept sketch will be created and emailed to you within 30 days. You can then either approve the sketch or request modifications before it becomes final artwork.

Your front cover artwork will be completed within about 30 days and sent for your approval, and then you will receive a copy of the art to be used on the final cover design.

Up to five hours of illustration time and corrections with no additional charges are included. After five hours of work, an hourly rate of $79 per hour will apply.

Will I be able to speak to the illustrator?

Depending on your specific ideas you may or may not speak with the actual illustrator, but you will be able to have a phone conversation to discuss your cover with the illustration coordinator.

Is there anything I should do in preparation for my design call?

To prepare for your design call, gather your ideas, sketches and notes for quick reference during the call. It might be helpful to have a computer with Internet access nearby incase you need to reference something quickly. Don't forget to relax and have fun! What kinds of styles and subjects can your illustrators create?

The illustration can be done using a variety of mediums including ink, watercolor, pastel, graphite, photography and digital formats. Our illustrators can depict a variety of subjects including, portraits, landscapes, animals, technical drawings, maps, graphs, and much more.

I don't have any idea what I want my cover to look like. Can the illustrator just make something up?

Since you are most familiar with your likes, dislikes and what your book is about, it is best if you provide some direction for your illustrator. Although you can give them creative freedom if you choose, it is more probable that you will like the first proof of the cover illustration if you give as much input as possible.

Does the Front Cover Custom Design include the finished design of my book's front cover?

The Front Cover Custom Design is only the creation of cover art. You can then use the illustration to put your own cover design together. At our discretion, we can accept your designed cover if it meets our technical criteria. If you would like Wordclay to design the front cover layout as well, you can purchase the Stock Art Cover design service.

Does the Front Cover Custom Design include an illustration or design of the back cover too?

No, the service is only for the front cover design.

Will I receive the original artwork?

You will receive the finished, full-size digital file of the cover illustration, but not the physical original piece of art (for example, if it's a painting, you will not receive the actual painting).

Who owns the copyright to the artwork?

You own the copyright to the artwork. If you choose to have our cover designers format your cover using the artwork, however, we own the copyright to the finished, formatted cover in our cover templates. You can use the artwork in other formats though, just not using our finished cover file.
